In Depth: Success of local HPV vaccine campaigns highlights shortcomings nationwide
For veteran gynecologist Duan Xianzhi, Aug. 1, 2020, is a special day. Since that Saturday, Jungar Banner, a county-level jurisdiction in the city of Ordos in the northern region of Inner Mongolia, became the first place in the Chinese mainland to administer free 2-valent HPV vaccines for schoolgirls ages 13 to 18.
Duan, who works at Beijing Tongren Hospital, is behind the vaccination drive that would lead the way for other parts of the country. Currently, 15 cities across China are in a pilot program to promote HPV vaccines in the fight against a virus that causes cervical cancer, the fourth-most common cancer in women.
Scarce supplies, high prices and patchy public awareness of HPV vaccines have thwarted widespread inoculation in China.

China-U.S. audit regulation talks are proceeding smoothly, securities regulator says
Recent China-U.S. talks on audit regulation cooperation have been progressing smoothly, and both sides will continue talking to work toward a solution, China’s top securities regulator said Thursday.
“The Chinese side and the U.S. Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) have had several rounds of candid, professional and efficient talks, and overall progress has been smooth,” the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said in a Q&A posted on its website.
“Both sides are willing to resolve their differences and the issues, and the final result depends on the wisdom and original intentions of both sides,” the CSRC said.

Analysts cut estimates for China’s GDP growth amid Covid surge
The impact of China’s ongoing wave of Covid-19 outbreaks could knock more than 1 percentage point from its first-quarter GDP growth, analysts said.
In line with the country’s “dynamic Zero-Covid” strategy, local governments are imposing restrictions of different degrees to limit activity, affecting both economic demand and supply.

Covid controls leave Shanghai Port plagued by delays
Measures to contain Shanghai’s worst ever coronavirus outbreak are disrupting operations at the world’s busiest container port, likely delaying core exports from electronics to textiles and pharmaceutical ingredients to cars.
While ships have been allowed to dock as normal, there are significant delays arising from Covid-19 testing protocols which are hindering trucks and cargo barges from loading and unloading their cargo, sources in shipping and freight forwarding firms told Caixin.

Country Garden snaps up property assets from partners amid market turmoil
Property giant Country Garden Holdings Co. Ltd. has been picking up assets by the dozen from its partners, a sign that it is one of the few big private developers that have managed to avoid major liquidity issues.
The acquisitions illustrate how the healthier companies in China’s battered real estate industry are taking advantage, albeit cautiously, of the market turmoil to increase their property holdings, in line with government policy.
